CBAA Project Assistance Grant Recipient 2012: DANIEL MELLIS

A History of Light is an artist’s book that explores the relationship between memory, photography, historical documents, and the inaccessibility of the past through a poetic examination of the negative space of the Dan Ryan Expressway in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. The book tells the story of a group of people who have become blind to a stretch of highway near the Chicago River. In their attempt to understand this perceptual deficit, they discover a second sight that allows them to access fragments of the past.
