Social Justice/Social Practice in Book Arts

Scripps College, Spring 2019
Professor Tia Blassingame

During the Spring 2019 semester, the Art 137: Social Justice/Social Practice in Book Arts seminar course at Scripps College studied how artists utilize the book form to explore social justice issues under the direction of Professor Tia Blassingame. They conducted interviews with artists and curators, curated a book arts exhibition, and created letterpress prints.

The print portfolio contains sixteen on social justice topics including sexual assault, cost of higher education, Iranian women’s rights, and the treatment of women in STEM. Coupled with pressure prints or cut vinyl, handset letterpress of varied typefaces appears on 6 x 9 inch sheets of Hahnemühle Ingres paper. Compiled in a white envelope, the print portfolio is numbered and signed by the artists. Students documented their process and inspiration in textual and photographic entries on the class website, justicepracticebooks.omeka.net.

Collections: Amistad Research Center at Tulane University, Bibliotheca Librorum apud Artificem, Ella Strong Denison Library (Scripps College), Lafayette College, and private collections.

Their activities are featured on the class website, justicepracticebooks.omeka.net.
