SECRETARY

Are you passionate about book arts and have an eye for organizational detail? The Secretary is an incredible asset to CBAA due to their observant record keeping, bringing clarity and forming connections across the organization’s committees and activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sends out membership meeting and board of directors meeting notices
  • Keeps meeting minutes • Gathers committee minutes from the chairs
  • Signs instruments of the organization as required
  • Corresponds when necessary with other organizations on behalf of the association 

Helpful Skills:

  • Familiarity with digital tools
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Adaptable and collaborative
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines

COMMUNICATIONS CHAIR

Are you passionate about book arts and skilled in connecting people through clear, engaging communication? The Communications Chair plays a vital role in shaping the voice of CBAA. This position oversees the organization’s social media and website updates, and coordinates communications across committees and with the broader community. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops and implements communication strategies • Manages and creates content for digital platforms (email, web, and social media) • Ensures consistent branding and messaging • Collaborates with board members and committees to promote events and initiatives

Helpful Skills:

  • Familiarity with digital tools (e.g., Mailchimp, WordPress, Instagram) • Graphic design and visual storytelling experience is a plus • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines

PUBLICATIONS CHAIR

Are you passionate about books arts scholarship and the written word? The Publications Chair manages educational and scholarly content within a team of skilled writers and editors, overseeing an array of digital publications that contribute meaningfully to the book arts field. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Delegates responsibilities to and supports the activities of the Openings Editor and Editorial Board, the Vice-Chair for Theory + Criticism, the Vice-Chair for Archives, and the Vice-Chair for Oral History
  • Serves on the Openings Editorial Board
  • Represents the committee on the Board of Directors
  • Schedules and plans agenda for regular committee meetings
  • Manages the Publications email account, communicating with members, Openings editorial point people, and other Board members, as well as answering any other inquiries as needed
  • Maintains digital archive of committee documents
  • Submits an annual budget based on projected initiatives

Helpful Skills:

  • • Written and verbal communication skills • Familiarity with digital tools • Leadership skills and/or experience • Editorial experience is a plus

NOMINATIONS and MEMBERSHIP Committee

Conducting research on book arts-related programs and organizations, to add to an email contact list that includes academic programs, community organizations, and other clubs and groups in the areas of book arts, printmaking, photography, creative writing, zines, and more. We’d love a few volunteers to assist with these efforts, and this would be a great project for someone interested in learning more about other book arts efforts out there!

COMMUNICATIONS: Vice Chair for Member Relations

Creates and distributes the bi-monthly e-blast that communicates important info to membership. Assists with projects as requested by the communications chair.

PUBLICATIONS: CBAA Journal, Openings

Editorial Board
Appointment and Term: Editorial Board Members are nominated by the Editor in consultation with the Publications Committee and appointed by the CBAA Board. Editorial Board Terms are for three years and are renewable for a second three years with the consent of the Editor and the CBAA Board.

Functions: The Editorial Board is advisory to the Editor. The Editorial Board collaborates with the Editor to review progress, develop strategic goals, approve journal policies, practices, and house style, recruit Peer Reviewers, and solicit materials for the journal. Editorial Board Members may also serve as Peer Reviewers. The Editor and Editorial Board may institute recurring or special-topic features or columns for the journal. Editorial Board Members may take editorial responsibility for such items with the Editor’s consent.

Time commitment: The Editorial Board communicates ad hoc through email and formally by regularly scheduled conference calls to consult with the Editor, assess progress, and make decisions about policies and other issues relating to the operations of the journal. Editorial Board members also support the growth of the journal by soliciting articles and promoting the journal as opportunities arise.

Structure: The Editorial Board should consist of two people who are members of the CBAA Board, including the Chair of the Publications Committee, who serves as liaison with the CBAA Board of Directors, and at least three non-board members drawn from the CBAA membership. The Editorial Board should, as much as possible, be geographically diverse and include a broad range of expertise/interests within the field. Editorial Board terms should be staggered in order to provide a balance between continuity and new input. It is generally preferred that Editorial Board members not submit articles while they are active on the board. Exceptions may occasionally be considered by the Editor and in consultation with the Editorial Board when appropriate.

PUBLICATIONS: CBAA Journal, Openings

Book Review Editor
Appointment and Term: The Book Review Editor is nominated by the Editor in consultation with the Publications Committee and Editorial Board and appointed for a three-year, renewable term by the CBAA Board. A stipend will be provided to the Book Review Editor, payable as each journal issue is published.

Functions: The Book Review Editor is responsible for making contacts with scholars and publishers so that appropriate books are reviewed in the journal, for assigning books to specific reviewers, for accepting the draft reviews, and for working with those reviewers to bring their work to completion. The Book Review Editor should review the Submissions Guideline Document annually to ensure that the books reviewed continue to support the mission and scope of the journal and the CBAA.

Time commitment:The Book Review Editor commits the time necessary to be in contact with authors, publishers, and the Editor so as to develop a steady stream of high-quality, relevant books for review. The Book Review Editor consults regularly with the Editor and the Editorial Board about review content and processes.

Structure: In order to understand the broad interests of the Association, the Book Review Editor should be a CBAA member, preferably one who is professionally active, who regularly attends CBAA meetings, and who regularly attends meetings and conferences hosted by other relevant organizations.

Genre Editors: Book Review, Scholarly Articles, Student Perspectives
Appointment and Term (per genre): The Genre Editor is a volunteer position, nominated by the Editor in consultation with the Publications Committee and Editorial Board and appointed for a three-year, renewable term by the CBAA Board.

Functions: Functions: The Genre Editor is responsible for making contacts with scholars, publishers, authors, and artists so that appropriate content is published in the journal, for assigning books to specific reviewers (book review editor), for accepting the drafts of content, and for working with those scholars, publishers, authors, and artist to bring their work to completion. The Genre Editor should review the Submissions Guideline Document annually to ensure that the published content continues to support the mission and scope of the journal and the CBAA.

Time commitment:The Genre Editor commits the time necessary to be in contact with scholars, publishers, authors, and artists, and the Editor so as to develop a steady stream of high-quality, relevant content for publication. The Genre Editor consults regularly with the Editor and the Editorial Board about content and processes.

Structure: In order to understand the broad interests of the Association, the Genre Editor should be a CBAA member, preferably one who is professionally active, who regularly attends CBAA meetings, and who regularly attends meetings and conferences hosted by other relevant organizations.

Regarding journal content, the Genre Editors:

  • advise contributors about the results of peer review and about any necessary revisions; 
  • communicate with contributors regarding deadlines and publication; 
  • Genre Editors are first pass of proofreading; 
  • facilitate the writing of articles when applicable.
