Openings: Studies in Book Art, the journal of the College Book Art Association is announcing a Meeting of Interest on August 3rd at 2:00 PM (MST) for members that are interested in serving as Genre Editors for Openings journal.

Genre Editors are volunteer positions that are responsible for making contacts with scholars, publishers, authors, and artists in order to locate content and sheppard it through the publishing process of Openings journal.

We are seeking Genre Editor’s for the following areas:

Exhibition Reviews Genre Editor: Openings looks forward to publishing exhibition reviews from all over the world, and the US to keep members informed.

Studio Praxis Genre Editor: Openings is looking for the perspectives on artists in their workshops, ateliers and talleres.

 Student Perspectives Genre Editor: There are so many students that create a vast number of new works and have a significant number of new ideas it  would be fantastically informative to have a graduate student or two seek out and share the perspectives of other students at their own and other institutions.

Academic Peer Reviewed Articles Genre Editor: Openings is always looking for the latest scholarly and critical theory articles on book arts.  

All Genre Editors will seek out new perspectives, global perspectives, in order to present a more ample and diversified panorama of the book arts.  This is a great opportunity to give service in CBAA and build your own personal network.

Appointment and Term (per genre): The Genre Editor position is a volunteer position, nominated by the Editor in consultation with the Publications Committee and Editorial Board and appointed for a three-year, renewable term by the CBAA Board.

Functions: The Genre Editor is responsible for making contacts with scholars, publishers, authors, and artists so that appropriate content is published in the journal, for assigning books to specific reviewers (book review editor), for accepting the drafts of content, and for working with those scholars, publishers, authors, and artist to bring their work to completion. The Genre Editor should review the Submissions Guideline Document annually to ensure that the published content continues to support the mission and scope of the journal and the CBAA.

Time commitment: The Genre Editor commits the time necessary to be in contact with scholars, publishers, authors, and artists, and the Editor so as to develop a steady stream of high-quality, relevant content for publication. The Genre Editor consults regularly with the Editor and the Editorial Board about content and processes.

Structure: In order to understand the broad interests of the Association, the Genre Editor should be a CBAA member, preferably one who is professionally active, who regularly attends CBAA meetings, and who regularly attends meetings and conferences hosted by other relevant organizations.

Regarding journal content, the Genre Editors:

▪ advise contributors about the results of peer review and about any necessary revisions;

▪ communicate with contributors regarding deadlines and publication;

▪ Genre Editors are first pass of proofreading;

▪ facilitate the writing of articles when applicable.
