2021 CBAA Virtual Meeting

Greetings CBAA Members,

On behalf of the CBAA Board of Directors, I am writing to share our difficult but necessary decision to cancel the in-person 2021 CBAA Annual Meeting in Tacoma, Washington, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and potential risks to the health of our members.

As an alternative to that in-person event, the Meetings and Programs committee will organize a one-day virtual 2021 CBAA Annual Meeting. This meeting will be free and open to all members and will take place in the first half of the year. With this virtual program, we will address many of the issues raised in our field during 2020, including forums about online book art education and conversations about race and diversity in the book arts. We will announce more information about this special virtual meeting at the end of August 2020.

We have established an ad hoc committee to focus specifically on the planning and facilitation of this alternative event, and we invite any CBAA members interested in serving on the committee to contact Amanda D'Amico, our Vice Chair for Meetings, atmeetings@collegebookart.org

I want to thank Jessica Spring and Jane Carlin, our Tacoma regional co-hosts, as well Jessica Peterson, our Vice President for Programming, and Amanda D'Amico, our Vice Chair for Meetings, for the planning and effort that they have already invested in the 2021 Annual Meeting. I also want to thank the CBAA board members who volunteered to help us transform this cancellation into an opportunity to explore alternative models of access and provide new benefits to our membership.

To that end, we would like to share two new online resources for our community:

  • Online Resources for Book Arts Educators and Book Artists

This is an evolving document that was initially created by the CBAA Board of Directors in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The document can be edited by anyone, with active moderation provided by CBAA. Please contribute, update, and share this with your colleagues in our field and beyond.

  • Book Art Forum

This is an online discussion forum for CBAA members. We are initiating this new membership feature with an inaugural category dedicated to remote teaching. We hope that you will share your questions, knowledge, and experiences by contributing to the discussion. We also hope that the forum will grow into a resource that includes many categories of discussion, evolving through and beyond this moment to better serve our members. Anyone can access the forum, but only current CBAA members can create and reply to discussion topics and suggest new categories of discussion.

The CBAA Board is engaged in active conversation about other ways that we can provide support to our members during this challenging time. As always, your suggestions are welcome. I invite you to email me directly at president@collegebookart.org with any ideas, suggested resources, questions, or concerns that you may have.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work to respond, adapt, and evolve as an organization. We are grateful for your membership and we wish you, your families, and your communities well.
